I can’t believe it’s November. Daylight saving kicked in today and the extra hour to sleep in was perfect. The days are getting crisper and cooler and I’m wishing for snow instead of rain. This time of year it’s easy to get into a slump of any kind.
If you’re in a reading slump or simply in a habit of buying books online you should really consider a visit to a bookstore. Since the internet, there have been less bookstores making it, so it is important to support the ones still left. These four ways to romanticize your visit to the bookstore will help you have a great time, while supporting your local community.
As a reader or a shopper in general it is often easier to simply order online, but going into stores can help you feel inspired and meet new people. Here are four things you can do to romanticize your visit to the bookstore!
- Browse – Don’t just walk in, grab your book and leave, take time to look around. Look at the stationery and any other sections of your bookstore. Let yourself feel inspired to do something new. Write, draw or pick up a puzzle. Check out shelves with different genres other than your favourite. Enjoy the experience and let yourself browse without a time limit. I know that I could spend hours upon hours at a bookstore! There is so much to do and so many things to look at.
- Talk to people – The quiet in bookstores is one of my favourite things about them. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t interact with people. I love chatting with fellow shoppers as well as people who work at the store. This is probably the best way to get out of a reading slump. If you talk to people who work there they are likely super knowledgeable about books. I love picking these people’s brains on books to read and recommendations on genres I have never read before. Talking to other people while shopping is also the best. I love meeting like minded people and it is amazing to have the instant connections over shared books you have read. It’s pretty amazing how long you can talk about a random book or series!
- Check out the children’s section – This is my favourite thing to do in a bookstore! This might not be a common thing to do but I think it is so fun. The mix of nostalgia and excited kids brings a smile to my face every time. I love flipping through picture books and admiring the whimsical illustrations and simple stories. It is so peaceful and always helps make me feel more calm. It’s a great way to get out of a reading slump as the stories are so short; they can be finished in minutes. Yet I still feel a sense of completion and joy after reading one.
- Sit down and read – Enjoy the atmosphere and the decor of the bookstores. Most bookstores are beautifully decorated with gorgeous styles and comfy chairs. I love sitting in one and reading through the start of the books I want to buy. Then I chose the couple that I want to get.
Finally, romanticizing your bookstore visit is about making it feel special. Turn it into an event, grab some food beforehand or wear your favourite outfit. Remember to browse, talk to new people and take time to sit down and read. Check out the Children’s Section too; it’s a lot of fun. This is a great recipe for a fun outing with a friend or an awesome day out. It will also be the perfect way to get out of your reading slump.
Thanks for reading!
